No Political Prisoners Problem in Azerbaijan – MP Elmira Akhundova

Azerbaijan, Baku / Т corr I. Alizadeh / MP Elmira Akhundova, a member of the Azerbaijani Delegation to PACE, reported on April 4th that Azerbaijan had for the most part met its obligations for the Council of Europe (CE) and the process is still under way. For this reason the PACE cannot apply any sanctions towards Azerbaijan during the Spring Session.

Despite the fact the PACE co-reporters in Azerbaijan, Andreas Herkel and Tony Lloyd, included the issue of political prisoners into their reports, and some human rights activists state that the problem has not been settled yet in the country, Akhundova does not agree. She voiced her confidence that Azerbaijan never had political prisoners. PACE raised the question once and it was closed, citing Azerbaijan as meeting all of its requirements on the matter.

The MP noted that the Azerbaijani Delegation to PACE had seriously prepared itself for the Spring Session.

The Spring Session will be held in Strasbourg on April 16th-20th. The obligations undertaken by Azerbaijan for the CE will be discussed at the session.
