Nagorno-Karabakh Will Never Be Independent – Azerbaijani President States

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated to a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on 13 April that Nagorno-Karabakh will be never granted independence and the Armenian-occupied lands will be liberated. The meeting was dedicated to result of the first quarter of 2007.

He attributed Armenia's non-constructive position on the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to their failures. Reminding those concerned of the conduct of talks on the resolution of the conflict within the framework of the Prague Process, the Azerbaijani President stated anew that Nagorno-Karabakh will be never granted independence.

Estimating the signing of a contract on the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan railway as the major event of the fourth quarter, the President stated that it is one of the factors testifying Azerbaijan's independence in the settlement of regional issues. "Despite attempts made by Armenia, which was set aside from the process, to hinder the construction of the route, thanks to its political will, Azerbaijan achieved positive resolution to the problem," the Head of State stressed.

Armenia has occupied 20% of Azerbaijan's territory since 1992. Until the present the Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and seven districts attached to it are under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces. In 1994 Azerbaijan and Armenia reached a ceasefire agreement.
