Azerbaijani MP Says PACE To Put an End to Issue Regarding Political Prisoners in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. I. Alizadeh/ Ganira Pashayeva, a member of the Milli Majlis ( Azerbaijan's Parliament) and member of the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has said that the organization has put an end to the issue regarding political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani MP said that if Azerbaijani human rights activists, who have been invited to participate in the spring session of PACE, raised the issue on political prisoners in the country, then the Azerbaijani Parliamentary Delegation to PACE would express its opinion on these issues, as well as protest against discussions on this topic.

Mrs Pashayeva noted that it would be quite natural if representatives of different political parties and human rights activists representing the country would participate in meetings of the forthcoming PACE session. "They may express their opinions on the issues to be discussed during the forthcoming event. This is their right. Azerbaijani citizens have gained the right to appeal to the European Court. If somebody considers that the Azerbaijani local courts do not protect their interests fully, then let them use their right and appeal to the European Court," she added.

Notably, the Spring Session of PACE will launch its work at its headquarters in Strasburg in a couple of hours. During the session, the issue of Azerbaijan fulfilling its commitments, that the country has taken upon itself, to PACE, will be discussed. The Azerbaijani Parliamentary Delegation to participate in the forthcoming event will include Samad Seyyidov (the head of the Azerbaijani Delegation), MPs Gultakin Hajjiyeva, Sabir Hadjiyev, Ganira Pashayeva, Ali Husseynov and Rafael Husseynov. The PACE session is expected to conclude on April 20.
