Azerbaijani Defence Minister to Deliver Report to Parliament

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr I. Alizadeh / At parliament's closed meeting, MP Zahid Oruj, member of the Parliamentary Permanent Commission on Security

MP noted that the report will have a positive effect to ensure the national interest and security of the country, it will involve serious reforms and increase the level of international military co-operation of Azerbaijan.

With the Armed Forces being modernized, Oruj indicated the improvements that are currently under implementation. "The parliament is in charge of this. Monitoring exercises would be efficient in this connection," MP added.

Despite the fact that the Ministry of Defence made no comment on the occasion, a military expert, retired colonel-lieutenant Uzeyir Jafarov, noted that the army administration in most countries submits an account to parliament. This fact is not unusual so we should not oppose it.

" Azerbaijan lacks such a practice. However, soon enough we will have to introduce it, as it will be of great importance for transparency which is required by international organizations," Jafarov urged.

The budget expenditure for the army comprised AZN 1.7bln in 2007. Jafarov suggested that the government should control the expenses as well as ensure that the military administration deliver a report.
