Data on Corruption Revealed in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. S. Ilhamgizi/ Nazim Makhmoudov, a representative of the Department against Corruption of the Azerbaijani State Public Office, stated during today's arrangement dedicated to the results of "State Programme against Corruption" that 39 criminal cases have been brought against 79 officials due to corruption in Azerbaijan's state bodies.

According to Mr Makhmoudov, in 2005, due to details connected to corruption in state bodies, the Azerbaijani courts considered 12 cases. In 2006, this figure increased - a total of 39 criminal cases were initiated against 79 officials. For the last three months of this year, 11 criminal cases have been brought against 24 officials.

According to the representative of the Department against Corruption, the motives of the crimes were mainly bribe taking, embezzlement as well as exceeding commissions and authority. The officials, who have been made responsible, were mainly officials working in security bodies, the education system and municipalities of the country.
