Next Meeting of Representatives of Council of Europe’s Venice Commission

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend A.Ismaylova / The next meeting of the representatives of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and the Government of Azerbaijan to improve Azerbaijan's Electoral Code will take place at the end of May.

The employee of the Elections Department of the Venice Commission, Sergey Kuznetsov, said on 2 May that the next meeting in Strasburg will focus on the issues of organizing the composition of the election commissions, election campaign and registration of the candidates. Kuznetsov stressed that the work on the Azerbaijan's Electoral Code is planned to be completed by autumn. In September the Venice Commission will prepare a conclusion on the project of amendments to the Code.

The previous meeting of the working group that took place at the beginning of April in Baku decided to make amendments to the Code regarding fingerprinting during the election. For the first time, this rule had been used in 2005 parliamentary elections according to the Presidential decree. In addition, the meeting covered the complaints about the decisions on the election process and an agreement was reached to make amendment to the Code.
