Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr E. Huseynli / Azerbaijani Government has proceeded to preparations for the forthcoming presidential elections to be held on 15 October 2008, the director of the Executive Administration of Azerbaijani President, Ramiz Mehdiyev, reported on 23 May.
Mehdiyev noted that at present, the President, Ilham Alivev, is held in great esteem by the public. "A poll will reveal that 98% of the citizens will vote for the current president," Mehdiyev added.
Mehdiyev ruled out the introduction of a mixed election system in Azerbaijan and noted that it would be possible only after the formation of a normal, democratic, and cultured opposition in the country. According to Mehdiyev, the issue might be considered on the eve of the next elections.
