Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr I. Alizadeh / Changes should be made in the Law on Freedom of Religion, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Azerbaijani governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), Siyavush Novruzov, suggested on 31 May during the meeting of Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan Parliament).

Novruzov noted that a number of problems had occurred in the field of religion. He stressed the situation that appeared in connection with using microphones and amplifiers while reading azan (call for prayer in Islam voiced by the muezzin from a minaret).

"I consider it necessary to certify mullahs as heads of mosques. At present, Azerbaijan certifies professionals in various fields. Certifying religious figures should not be ruled out," he added.

Thus, Novruzov suggests reviewing the Law on Freedom of Religion at the autumn session of the parliament.
