Eighty-Five Percent of Drugs Transported to Azerbaijan Comes from Iran

Azerbaijan, Shaki / Тrend corr P. Aliyeva / Some 85% of the drugs transported to Azerbaijan come from Iran, an employee of the State Customs Committee, Ogtay Mammadov, stated on 9 June at scientific-practical conference in Azerbaijani southern region of Lankaran.

The attendees of the joint event of the working group of the State Commission on Fight against Drug Addiction and Drug Trafficking and Lankaran Executive Power paid attention to the fact that bordering of Iran and Azerbaijani southern regions aggravates the criminogenic situation in the area.

According to the head of the working group, Israfil Aliyev, 18, 704 drug addicts have been officially registered in Azerbaijan. The number of the drug addicts that have not been registered allegedly exceeds 100,000, with 1,037 of them AIDS affected people. The most of them (900 people) reside in Lankaran.

Eighty-four people, with 11 of them underage have been made answerable for illegal drug trafficking (the most of them residents of the southern region), an employee of the State Committee on Family, Women, and Children Issues, Vasila Movsumova, reported.
