Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend I.Alizadeh / Sulkhaddin Akpar, the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Musavat Party, stated on 27 June that the Party would not boycott the forthcoming Presidential elections in Azerbaijan in 2008.

"Musavat considers that it is not right to speak about boycotting when the popular belief in a fair election is maintained on the lower level. Boycotting will therefore not produce any positive results," Akpar noted.

According to Akpar, the position of Musavat on the forthcoming Presidential elections is clear. Isa Gambar, the head of the Party will nominate his candidacy for the elections. Presently, no other candidate registered in the party to nominate his candidacy for the Presidential elections.

A range of Azerbaijani opposition parties, as well as the Azadlyg Bloc have called on the population to boycott the forthcoming Presidential elections.

Musavat was formed at the beginning of the 20th century and the party was restored in 1992. Isa Gambar, the head of the Party, was the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament between 1992 and 1993 and a candidate for the 2003 Presidential elections.

Five MPs represented Musavat in the Azerbaijani Parliament.
