Opposition Musavat Party Against Boycott of Forthcoming of Presidential Elections in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.I.Alizadeh / The boycott of elections cannot be positively appreciated by Azerbaijan and international communities, Arif Hajili, the head of the Central Executive Administration of the Azerbaijani opposition party of Musavat, said.

Musavat Party hope to attend the presidential elections in Azerbaijan in 2008, Hajili said.

Discrepancies occurred with the opposition parties regarding the participation of the forthcoming presidential elections 2008. The representatives of the Azadlyg bloc, Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Citizen and Development Party and National Unity Movement consider that nobody should participate in the presidential elections without changes in the election legislation of the country being introduced and to form a new composition of election commission. Rasul Guliyev, the former ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament and the present leader of the Open Society Party, supported such a position.

However, Musavat, Socio-Democratic Party and other parties have had differing opinions.

Musavat Party began discussions regarding the impending 2008 presidential elections and to continue discussions during September.

The opposition party "Musavat" was founded in 1992. Isa Gambar, the present Chairman of the Party was the Ex-Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis) in 1992-1993 and a nominated candidate for the Presidential elections held in the country in 2003.
