Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend E.Huseynli /insertion of the Sumgayit city of Azerbaijan into a list of 10 mostly polluted cities of the world is groundless, Huseyngulu Bagirov, the Azerbaijan Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources, said in Baku on 4 October. He was addressing an international conference on on Caspian Sustainable Development's Strategy.
Blacksmith Institute developed a report on the ecological situation in Sumgayit without monitoring. "The researches revealed that the text of the report was taken from the article published in Azerbaijan International in 1994," Bagirov said.
The Institute included Sumgayit into a list of 10 polluted cities of the world.
The minister said that to improve ecological situation of Sumgayit the Azerbaijan Government and the World Bank implements joint projects. They include plans on land treatment from mercury. Bagirov said that photos published in the report were taken in 1988.
