Azerbaijani Journalist recalled for a trial by Minister of Foreign Affairs

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr E. Huseynli / The editor-in-chief of the Real Azerbaijan and Gundalik Azerbaijan newspapers, Eynulla Fatullayev, was arrested due to the lawsuit recall by the Azerbaijani Minister of ForeignAffairs, Elmar Mammadyarov, Fatullayev's attorney, Isakhan Ashurov, said at the preparatory hearing at the Azerbaijan Court on Serious Crimes said on 5 October.

According to him, Mammadyarov applied to the Azerbaijan National Security Ministry stating that an article published by Fatullayev in his newspaper caused discontent of the representatives of Azerbaijani diplomatic missions abroad and caused harm to intergovernmental relations. The attorney petitioned to invite Mammadyarov to the court to testify.

Fatullayev is charged with contravening Article 214 (threat of terrorism) and 283.2.2 (inspiration of national, racial, social or religious hatred with abuse of power) of the Criminal Code.

On the basis of the lawsuit commenced by the head of the Chief of the Centre for Protection of the Rights of Refugees and IDPs, Tatyana Chaladze , Fatullayev was sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment on 20 April.

Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry was unavailable for interviewing.
