Azerbaijani Ombudswoman Meets with Jailed Ex-Minister, His Brother, and Azerbaijani Newspaper’ s Editor-in-Chief

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend / Azerbaijani Ombudswoman Elmira Suleymanova visited the investigation cell of the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry and met with the ex-Minister for Economic Development Farhad Aliyev, his brother Rafig Aliyev, who was the head of Azpetrol company, and with Eynulla Fatullayev, editor of now-shuttered Gundalik Azerbaycan and Realny Azerbaijan independent newspapers, the Ombudswoman's administration reported on 7 November.

Farhad Aliyev said that he had been groundlessly arrested and now wants to be transferred to a medical unit of the Penitentiary Service in the Justice Ministry.

Eynulla Fatullayev expressed his discontent with the decision of the Azerbaijani Court of Heavy Crimes regarding his trial.

The prisoners said to the Ombudswoman that their files were sent to the European Court on Human Rights. 

Farhad Aliyev and Rafig Aliyev were sentenced to 10 and 9 years of imprisonment respectively on corruption charges.

The Azerbaijani Court of Heavy Crimes sentenced Eynulla Fatullayev to an eight-and-a-half-year prison term on terror threat, provoking of inter-national hatred, and tax evasion charges.
