Azerbaijani Press Council to Appeal to Law Enforcement Bodies Due to Detention of Editor-in-Chief

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Press Council of Azerbaijan appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Internal Ministry of Azerbaijan due to arrest of the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azadligr, Ganimat Zahidov, the chairman of the Press Council, Aflatun Amashov, said to Trend news agency on 12 November.

According to Amashov, the detention of Zahidov alarms the Council. "Zahidov is not only a journalist he is editor-in-chief of one of the most popular newspapers in the country. Furthermore, Zahidov is a member of the Organizational Committee. Taking into consideration all these facts we cannot remain indifferent to his arrest," Amashov said.

The Council will do everything for Zahidov's arrest to be re-considered in the boundaries of legislation. The Council will appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office and the Internal Ministry.

The Yasamal District Court of Baku sentenced Zahidov to two months detention on 11 November.

If the charges against Zahidov are proven he could face three years in prison.
