( RIA Novosti ) - Steve McClaren has been sacked as England manager following the side's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, the English FA announced on Thursday morning.
Needing only a draw to make the final stages of the tournament, England were outclassed at Wembley on Wednesday evening by a skillful Croatian side.
McClaren, taking shelter from torrential rain under a big FA umbrella, was a comic-tragic figure as England went down 3-2 to a team possessing all the qualities his multi-millionaire stars so painfully lacked.
The former Middleborough manger was appointed England manager in May 2006. He becomes the first England coach to fail to qualify for a major tournament since 1994.
He is expected to receive some $4 million compensation from the English FA.
