Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The 10th meeting of the World Congress of Azerbaijanis (WCA) will take place in May, 2008, the deputy chair of the Democratic CWA Ahmad Obali said to Trend.

The WCA was founded in the United States in 1997. The organization protects the rights of Azerbaijanis living abroad. In 2003, the organization was divided into two parts. A group of members protesting against inactivity of the Congress established its own organization claiming to be called WCA, but later it changed its name into the Democratic World Congress of Azerbaijanis (DWCA).

WCA and DWCA are negotiating for unification. According to Obali, the decision on unification has been already made and the uniting meeting will be held for this purpose. It will take place next year on the eve of the Republic Day of Azerbaijan - 28 May. The meeting may be held in Brussels at the European Parliament, in Sweden or any other country.

The aim for unification of the organizations is to provide former integrity, strengthen its activities, to popularize Azerbaijan abroad as a diaspora organization, and to protect the rights of Azerbaijanis. Candidates from both sides may be nominated for chairmanship during the upcoming meeting, Obali said.

The uniting meeting will be the 10th meeting of the CWA.

The ex-chair of CWA Javad Darakhti and his supporters left the organization and are expected to hold an emergency meeting in February. In case of the meeting CWA will split again.
