Azerbaijani Youth Protests against Unfair Court Verdicts

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr I. Ali-zadeh / Dalga youth movement in Azerbaijan held a protest action against unfair court verdicts. The action took place in the Sahil Garden in Baku on 23 November.

The young protestors staged a court trial. Conditional jailed journalists were sitting on the dock (the chief editor of the Gundalik Azerbaijan and Realny Azerbaijan newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev, the chief editor of the Azadliq newspaper Ganimat Zahid and his brother Sakit Zahidov [Mirza Sakit] from the same newspaper. Once the trial began, a conditional judge spoke to somebody by phone and then stated he did not want to listen to the defendants, their attorneys and witnesses. Then he sentenced the journalists to a long-term imprisonment.

The purpose of the action was to attract the attention of the public to unfair verdicts made in the Azerbaijani courts, the chair of Dalga Vafa Jafarova said. She stressed that they would continue such peaceful and original ideas.

The action involving 20 young protestors lasted about 20 minutes. After the action ended, they put flowers in front of the Azadliq newspaper's editorial office currently being pulled down and stuck photos of jailed journalists to stones.
