Lawyers to Intervene for Azadlig Editor-in-Chief Due to Poor Health

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Lawyers will intervene for the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azadlig due to the deterioration of his health.

The editor's lawyer, Elchin Sadikhli, said to Trend news agency that his client had eye-sight problems and leg aches.

On the evening of 11 November, editor-in-chief of the opposition Azadlyg newspaper, Ganimat Zahid was called to Yasamal District Court in Baku and was detained as a suspect. He was accused of hooliganism and assault charges. Zahid is currently being held in a preliminary detention cell. On 12 November, Yasamal District Court sentenced him to two months in prison. Currently eight journalists in Azerbaijan are under arrest.

Conditions in the prison negatively affect Zahid.

Earlier Yasamal District Court dismissed the petition by Zahid to release him on bail.

Eight journalists have been kept in prison in Azerbaijan due to their professional activity.
