Investigation Completed of Former Investigator Accused of Corruption

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / The investigation of former investigator in the Investigation Department of the Baku Prosecutor's Office Mahir Nagiyev accused of bribery and abuse of power has been concluded.

On 26 November, Nagiyev protested against the completion of the investigation, Nagiyev's attorney Vugar Khazayev reported to Trend on 27 November. On 30 November, the Nasimi District Court sentenced Nagiyev to 3-month imprisonment. By the decree of the Prosecutor General on 2 July, Nagiyev was discharged from his position and was stripped of his special title.

According to the attorney, Nagiyev protested that the investigation was biased and not fair. "The investigator does not interrogate witnesses who speak in favour of Nagiyev," Khasayev said. According to Khasayev, should the protest not be allowed, they will become familiar with the files of the criminal case.

The Department on Fighting against Corruption attached to the Prosecutor General's Office revealed during the investigation that Nagiyev received a bribe from Baba Mahmudzadeh and Ehtiram Ahmadov who were to face arrest.

The Department on Fighting against Corruption filed a criminal case on Nagiyev for charges of recurring bribery and abuse of power.
