Azerbaijan Should Reinforce Religious Enlightment to Prevent Radical Religious Groups – Scientist

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. E.Huseynli / An Azerbaijani religious scientist is alarmed at the radical religious tendencies in the country.

"We should reinforce religious popularization amongst the population in order to avoid the illegal activity of radical Vahabbists in the country," Vasim Mammedaliyev, scientist at the Baku State University, reported to Trend news agency on 29 November.

At the end of September 2007, a crime was committed by a group of Vahabists in which Lieutenant Kamran Asadov, an officer from the military division N of the Defense Ministry, acting in a criminal conspiracy with other members of a radical Vahhabist group, deserted his military unit and stole four submachine guns, one machine gun and 20 grenades, together with shells and other military equipment. The law enforcement agencies of Azerbaijan have established that the radical religious group had intended to commit acts of terrorism in strategic buildings, including diplomatic offices.

. The officials of the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry have reinforced security measures after information was distributed that the planned terrorist act was directed against foreign embassies in Azerbaijan.

Investigations by the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry revealed that Asadov was a member of a Vahabists religious group. The criminals hid part of their weapons in the Ismayilli region of Azerbaijan. The armed group was detained at 104, Sadova Avenur, Mashtaga Village Baku, on 27 October. During the operation, one of the criminals was killed.
