Jailed Journalists Stop Hunger-Strike

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / The jailed Azerbaijani journalists announced a hunger-strike on 22 November and stopped it on 30 November.

Mirza Sakit and Faramaz Novruzoglu stopped the hunger-strike after negotiating with the administration of the prison. They have no health problem, the PR of the Penitentiary Service at the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry reported to Trend.

Through the hunger-strike the journalists tried to stop pressure upon the pres in Azerbaijan, to improve maintenance conditions in Reformatory 14, and to hold there a monitoring to involve law-enforcement bodies, human rights activists and media representatives.

The Court announced Sakit guilty of illegal purchase and possessing of drugs and sentenced him to 3-year imprisonment.

Novruzoglu (Allahverdiyev) was announced guilty of defamation and abuse and was sentenced to 2-year-6-month imprisonment.
