Azerbaijani Commission for Pardon Consider Issue to Pardon Detained Journalists

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr. E.Huseynli / The Azerbaijani Commission for Pardon at the Presidential Administration holds daily meetings in order to issue the next decree on pardon.

"The names of detained journalists of Azerbaijan are included into the list considered by the Commission. The name of prisoners who appealed to the President may be included into the list on pardon," a member of the Commission MP Vagif Samadoglu stated.

Eight journalists have been kept in prison in Azerbaijan due to their professional activity.

Since July 1995, Azerbaijani President has issued 42 act of pardon. A total of 4,584 prisoners were pardoned. Most of prisoners were released from next part of their term. Forty-one under 18 years old, 168 disabled and olds and 77 women were released. Twenty-eight prisoners earlier sentenced life imprisoned were released and the term of some life imprisoned prisoners was decreased to 25 years.

A lot of appeals submitted to the Commission were considered, Samadoglu said. The document that will be developed by the Commission to be submitted to the President for consideration.

The next decree on pardon is expected to be issued on thresholds of 31 December on the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis.
