Broadcasting of Russian Television in   Azerbaijan Channel Likely to Be Restored: Member of National Council

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend E.Huseynli / The National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting is likely to restore the broadcasting of the Russian television channel RTR-Planeta in Azerbaijan. "If Russia ensures broadcasting of the Azerbaijani television channel AZTV in its national frequency, we will anew put for discussion the issue of restoration of broadcasting of RTR-Planeta," Gafar Jabiyev, a member of the Council, said in talks with Trend on 3 January.

In its meeting on 30 December the Council took a decision on cessation of broadcasting of RTR-Planeta in the Azerbaijani national frequency from 1 January. At the beginning of January 2007 the TV and Radio Council of Azerbaijan made a decision to cease the broadcasting of the Russian TV RTR-Planeta from 10 July. After the appeal of the Russian side and terms of the transmission of the Azerbaijani TV channel in Russian, the broadcasting of RTR-Planeta was extended. A working group on mutual broadcasting held four meetings, but no agreement was achieved.

Jabiyev said over the past five months Azerbaijan ahs repeatedly attempted to sole the issue of mutual broadcasting, whereas Russia did not make any concrete proposal.

The meeting of the Working Group took place in Moscow on 11-12 December. Russia was required a license for the broadcasting of the Azerbaijani TV in the Country. According to the Russian legislation, 50% of the investments allocated for the broadcasting of a TV channel in the Country's territory should belong to Russia.
