Information on Hunger Strike by Prisoners in Azerbaijan has No Grounds

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / The information on hunger strike by a group of prisoners in prison 1, was not approved. Leyla Yunus, the head of the Peace and Democracy Institute, stated that the convicted Ruslan Bashirli and Gadir Musayev kept in the prison 1, launched hunger strike protesting against the pressure by the leadership in the prison.

The Penal Service at the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry reported to Trend that the statement by Yunus has no grounds.

The information spread by the Service stated that some NGOs, members of the Public Committee and representatives of OSCE Baku Office, repeatedly held the monitoring in the prison 1.

Bashirli and Musayev officially appealed to the prison leadership and noted that they did not launch the hunger strike. Some groups are using their names for their political interest.

Isakhan Ashurov, Bashirli's attorney, met with Bashirli and informed that the prisoner was satisfied with the conditions in the prison.

Bashirli, the chairman of the New Idea Youth Organization, is charged with an attempt to keep the power, and is sentenced seven years of imprisonment.
