Human Right Activists of Azerbaijan To Introduce PACE New List of Political Prisoners

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 January / corr. Trend K. Zarbalilyeva/ The Azerbaijani human rights activists, who are supposed to take part at the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, will introduce a new list of the political prisoners.

Before the last amnesty, this list included 52 prisoners, Arzu Abdullayeva, the human rights activist said to Trend on 18 January.

17 people from this list were pardoned according to the President's last amnesty act. According to Abdullayev, the new list includes the names of 36 prisoners.

"10People, out of the people introduced in the list, suffer from the serious diseases. The names of the journalists including Ganimat Zahid, Mirza Sakit and Einulla Fatullayev who are currently take into custody, are also added to the list," Abdullayeva said.

According to Abdullayeva, the human right activists will raise the issue of the arrested journalists, changes to the Penal Code and to the Law on Freedom of Speech, during the meetings which will be held on the threshold of the PACE's winter session.

The names of those who are accused of the coup d'etat including the ex-ministers-Ali Insanov and Farhad Aliyev, Aleksandr Umniashki-the former department head of the Ministry of Public Health of Azerbaijan, Insanov's cousin-Anar Namazov, the national hero-Rasim Ekberov, former police chief- Mushvig Madatov and businessman-Shamsi Samadzade and those of others, are all added to the list.

The human right activists are expected to meet with the Council of Europe officials, Thomas Hammerberg- the commissioner on Human rights of this organization, with the reporter of the PACE monitoring Committee on Azerbaijan, and also with the Venice Commission officials and Ago Group.
