Another Journalist Sentenced to Long-Term Imprisonment in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 January / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Court of Heinous Crimes of Azerbaijan sentenced Mushvig Huseynov, a journalist from the newspaper Bizim Yol, to six years imprisonment, Vugar Khasiyev, Huseynov's attorney, stated to Trend.

The Prosecutor demanded seven years imprisonment for the journalist during the court process on 21 January. The judge Kamal Ramazanov announced the verdict of six years of imprisonment after consultation. The court also imposed prohibition of the journalist's activities.

Khasayev considers the charges against Huseynov ungrounded and intends to appeal the court's decision.

Huseynov was detained in summer 2007 for taking a bribe from an official of the Azerbaijani Labour and Social Protection Ministry.

At present, together with Huseynov two other journalists are being detained in prison, Eynulla Fatullayev, the editor-in-chief of the newspapers Realni Azerbaijan and Gundalik Azerbaijan, and Mirza Sakit, a journalist from the newspaper Azadlig.

The trial involving Ganimat Zahid, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Azadlig, is continuing.
