Number of Anomalous Climatic Occurrences Doubled in   Azerbaijan: Deputy Director of National Hydrometeorology Department

Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 January /corr. Trend E.Huseynli / The number of anomalous hydrometeorologic occurrences doubled in Azerbaijan due to the climate changes in the past 30 years, the Deputy Director of the National Hydrometeorology Department of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Umayra Tagiyeva, said to a press conference on 24 January.

In the period between 1961 and 2001 the temperature increased by 0.7 degree in Azerbaijan due to climate changes. In 2000 the record indicator (46 degree hot) was registered in the country.

According to Tagiyeva, the initial searches show that in 2000-2050 the average temperature in Azerbaijan will increase by 2.5 degree. She said that the climate change became an urgent problem. For this reason, assessment works will be carried out and strategic plans on measures of adjustment will be devised to present to the government. In this regard, the impacts of the climate changes on the health will be assessed. After this a new decision may be made by the government to change working regime in Azerbaijan.

According to the Deputy Director, the increase in the temperature will mainly affect the water resources. According to the initial studies, the level of water in the Caspian Sea will increase by 150 cm till 2040. the record hot weather is forecasted in Azerbaijan in summer months of the next years. According to Tagiyeva, if the impact of the gas creating 'hothouse effect' does not decrease and if it increases by two times, the average temperature may increase by 5 degree.
