France, Strasburg, 25 January / Trend corr. A. Maharramli, I. Alizade / The Special Representative for Freedom of Press of the Parliamentary Committee of the Council of Europe (PACE) Miklosh Harasti called to solve the problems that persist in the field of press in Azerbaijan. " Azerbaijan is one of the countries where violence against journalists remains unpunished," Harasti said at the press conference in Strasburg on 24 January.

Harasti urged for the cases on violence against journalists to be solved unambiguously.

According to the PACE Special Representative, Azerbaijan should, as soon as possible, begin tackling the problems persisting in the field of journalism. "Criminalization of the press means criminalization of journalism as a whole," he said.

On 24 January, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe (CE) Terry Davis and the chair of the CE Ago Monitoring group Thomas Hummerberg, who is also the CE Commissioner for Human Rights, discussed the situation with the press in Azerbaijan, Harasti said.

"The people with whom I met will send an appeal to Azerbaijan urging for the decriminalization of the press and journalism," Harasti said.
