Azerbaijani Ombudsman Inspects Publishing House

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 January / corr Trend S.Agayeva / The Azerbaijani Ombudsman is studying a tax violation issue related to the Publishing House Chap Evi.

"I do not have exact information about this case, but I am planning to study this issue carefully in the near future," Elmira Suleymnova, the Azerbaijani Ombudsman, said in speaking with journalists on 30 January.

The Azerbaijani Taxes Ministry has launched an inspection on the Publishing House due to possible violations of tax legislation by Chap Evi. The leadership of the Publishing House refutes all accusations and believes political motives are involved. Chap Evi publishes opposition newspapers.

This case is of particular interest to the US Embassy stated Anne Derse, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, in speaking with journalists of her intention to wait for the result of the inspection.

The United States, a country supporting the freedom of the press in Azerbaijan, promotes the functioning of many publishing houses in the country, the Ambassador said.
