Robert To Take A Walk In The Woods In Bryson Adaptation

( Contactmusic ) - Robert Redford is to produce and star in A Walk in the Woods - an adaptation of one of Bill Bryson's most popular books, it has been reported.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid star is in talks to finalise a deal to shoot a movie based on Bryson's 1998 travelogue.

The book tells of Bryson's attempt to trek the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail accompanied by Stephen Katz, his childhood friend and a recovering alcoholic.

The trade paper adds that Wag the Dog helmer Barry Levinson is currently in negotiations to direct the project, which is dependent on Redford's script approval.

The production was halted last May when Paul Newman, with whom Redford had hoped to collaborate for the third time, announced his retirement.

However Redford may not commence production on A Walk in the Woods immediately, even if the ongoing industrial action by the Writers' Guild of America (WGA) continues.

He is also reportedly developing an as-yet-untitled project about baseball great Jackie Robinson, who changed the face of America's favourite pastime by becoming the first black player to be signed professionally.

Save the Last Dance director Thomas Carter is attached to shoot the feature, which is likely to see Redford playing Brooklyn Dodgers manager Branch Rickey, who signed Robinson.
