Azerbaijani Azadlig Newspaper Detained Journalist to Join Hunger Strike

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 April / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Mirza Sakit, detained journalist of Azadlig newspaper, will join the hunger strike launched against the arrests of press representatives.

Rana Zahidova, Sakit's wife, stated to Trend that she met with her husband in the prison. Sakit will join the hunger strike on 3 April.

On 26 March, the imprisoned Fatullayav went on a hunger strike. The editor-in-chief demands objective consideration of his case, release of the arrested journalists and application of concrete protection mechanisms of the Council of Europe and OSCE.

The chief editor of Gundelik Azerbaijan newspaper-Shahvalad Chobanoglu, editor-in-chief of Yeni Musavat newspaper- Zahid Safaroglu and journalist of the newspaper- Elshan Balakhanli, are on a hunger strike for the five consecutive days to support the editor-in-chief of Gundalik Azerbaijan and Realniy Azerbaijan newspaper, Eynulla Fatullayev.

Zahidova stated that Sakit suffers from heart disease and his state worsened recently.

Sakit was sentenced to three years of imprisonment after the court's decision.

The Penitentiary Service at the Ministry of Justice reported that Sakit and his brother Ganimat Zahid had not appeal to the prison leadership yet.

There are three detained journalists for their professional activities in Azerbaijan.
