Azerbaijani Government to Aid Relatives of Those Missing in CIS

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 April / corr Trend I. Alizade/ The Commission of Inter-Parliament Assembly (IA) of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) has passed a Bill establish a Fund for government's providing aid to the relatives of those missing in post USSR area. "The Bill is of great importance as the government will provide aid to the relations of missing people. Therefore Azerbaijan supported the Bill," Elmira Akhundova, MP and member of Azerbaijani delegation in CIS IA said to Trend .

The Bill was passed during the IA meeting on social policy and human rights, said MP.

It is important for the government to support the under-age children and old age parents of the missing people. "There is no such law in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan can add some items of the Bill passed by the Inter-Parliament Assembly of CIS to its legislation," said Akhundova.

According to Akhundova, the CIS must expand cooperation with international organizations including International Red Cross Committee in searching missing people in line with the Bill.

"The Bill envisages determining the status of missing people and the cooperation amongst CIS countries in the case of bodies being discovered," she said.

Some 4,354 Azerbaijanis were missing during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict which erupted as a result of Armenia's military intervention. A total of 3,503 of the missing persons are soldiers and 841 are civilians.

The 30th plenary session of Inter-Parliament Assembly of CIS and the meeting of Council of IA began in St. Petersburg on 3 April.
