Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office Says Journalist was Stabbed by Homosexual

Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 April / Trend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan has publicized the official information about the employee of Azadlig newspaper Agil Khalil. The Prosecutor General's Office detained Sergey Strekalik as a suspect of stabbing the journalist.

Strekalik said he had intimate relations with Khalil, and on 13 March, he stabbed him because of jealousy.

Strekalik was accused of deliberate injuring and illegal purchase and keeping of drugs for personal use. The court verdict for him was imprisonment. "The countless incontestable evidence shows that the incident which happened with Khalil was not connected with his journalistic activities, but with his amoral actions and vengeance emerging from his relations with the representatives of sexual minority," the Prosecutor General's Office reported.

The Office also said that the administration of the Azadlig newspaper broke the law by divulging the information of preliminary investigation.

The Director of the Azadlig newspaper Azer Ahmadov said two days ago at a press conference that Agil Khalil was blackmailed by the Prosecutor Office's staff threatening to hold a campaign against him- representing him as a homosexual. Ahmadov said that this is a dirty campaign against the journalist and an attempt to shut down the Azadlig newspaper.
