Official   Baku  Accuses OSCE Representative of Non-Professional Approach

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 April / Trend corr G. Jabiyev/ Baku has voiced its regret regarding the statements regarding the media situation in Azerbaijan made by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media Miklos Haraszti.

"Haraszti spoke emotionally with a non-professional approach to the press situation in Azerbaijan," the head of the Public and Political Department at the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov said to journalist in Baku on 10 April.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media called on Azerbaijan's President to pardon the imprisoned journalists.

"In Azerbaijan journalists are imprisoned for critical articles and are accused of actions not connected with their profession. Law-enforcement bodies should put a stop to such attitudes against journalists," Haraszti said.

The three detained journalists held in Azerbaijan are Ganimat Zahid, chief editor of Azadlig newspaper, Mirza Sakit, a journalist of Azadlig newspaper, and Eynulla Fatullayev, chief editor of Gundalik Azerbaijan and Realni Azerbaijan newspapers.

Haraszti called on Azerbaijan's administration to improve the legislation and to stop pressure being put on journalists.
