Azerbaijani Prosecutor’s Office to Prove Authenticity of Reports on Azadlig Newspaper’s Journalist – Presidential Administration

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 April / Trend corr G. Jabiyev/ The Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan will prove in court the authenticity of the results of the investigation on the Azadlig newspaper journalist, Agil Khalil.

"The reports by the Prosecutor General's Office are authentic and they reflect the real process. The Prosecutor's Office is ready to prove the authenticity of the reports in court," the head of the Public and Political Department at the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov said to journalists on 10 April.

On 13 March, at 8.00pm Agil Khalil, a journalist of the Azadlig newspaper, was stabbed in the chest. The Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan announced that the journalist was injured on the basis of jealousy by Sergey Strekalin, who had intimate relations with him. The Prosecutor's Office is still investigating the case.

Miklos Haraszti, an OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, calls on the Azerbaijani media to stop a campaign against Agil Khalil, a journalist of the opposition newspaper Azadlig. "This campaign is a shameful action for the Azerbaijani mass media," he stated to a news conference in Baku on 9 April.

Hasanov said that some forces wrongly treat the information spread by the Prosecutor General's Office.

"Unfortunately, the Azerbaijani press is implementing a very dirty campaign on this case. It is regretful that several press bodies of Azerbaijan, including several representatives of international media organizations, are attracted to the campaign," Hasanov said.
