Azerbaijani Court Rules for Release of   Great Britain Citizen Charged with Rape

Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 April / corr. Trend S. Agayeva/ Great Britain citizen Patrick O'Brian, 49, who was charged with raping teenagers, has been released on 15 April through the verdict of the Azerbaijani court.

The Court for Serious Crimes of Azerbaijan ruled that O'Brian should not to imprisoned due to the fact that the crime was committed 15 years ago, which contradicts Azerbaijani legislation.

O'Brian was wanted on an international level and detained on 26 February in Baku as a result of efforts by the law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan. He was working in one of the foreign companies in Baku.

O'Brian's lawyer Fikrat Mirzayev stated that his client is charged with a crime that he committed when he was 19 years old. The documents states that he is accused of pedophilia and of raping his nephew and niece.

Earlier, the Embassy of Great Britain in Azerbaijan appealed to the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan to extradite the accused.
