Number of Deaths from Tuberculosis Amongst Prisoners has Decreased in   Azerbaijan – Public Committee

Azerbaijan, Baku, 17 April / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / The number of deaths from tuberculosis amongst prisoners have decreased in Azerbaijan, Chingiz Ganizade, a member of the Public Committee at the Justice Ministry, stated Trend .

Touching upon monitoring which has held in the punitive Institution 3, where prisoners are treated for tuberculosis, Ganizade stated that 45 prisoners died from tuberculosis in 2007. In 2003, the number of deaths was 157, 94 in 2004, 66 in 2005 and 53 in 2006.

Seventy-six prisoners amongst 950 prisoners suffer from a severe form of the disease, three being women and 44 have recently been detained. Some 415 prisoners are being treated within the framework of the program DOTS + International Red Cross Committee. Two prisoners that suffer from tuberculosis are also infected with AIDS.

During the monitoring, the members of the Public Committee met with 20 of the prisoners and familiarized themselves with the conditions in prison, their diet and their treatment. Results of the monitoring will be developed and submitted to Fikrat Mammadov, the Justice Minister.

Ganizade stated that there were plans to hold the next meeting in the prison with the participation of media representatives.
