Azerbaijani Citizens Will Receive New Passports in 2012

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 April / Trend corr K. Zarbaliyeva/ "After 2011-2012, Azerbaijani citizens will not be permitted to visit European countries and America using their old passports," Mehdi Najafov, deputy head of State Population Registration Service attached to the Justice Ministry, said to Trend in an exclusive interview.

Najafov said that by 2011 all Azerbaijani citizens will be supplied with new passports which will reflect their biometric peculiarities.

According to Najafov, last year the Azerbaijani President decreed to create a national biometric identification system in the country. The State Commission was presided over by the Prime Minister and an administration from relevant ministries was established to fulfil the decree. The project of the State Program and the Arrangement Plan developed by special working group were undersigned by the President.

Najafov said that most countries in the world are switching to this system to improve the efficiency against trans-national crime, weapon and drugs trafficking. The new generation passports will contain finger-prints and facial biometric information in compliance to international standards.
