Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 May / corr Trend S.Agayeva / Koichiro Matsuura, the UNESCO Director General hopes that Icherisheher will be soon excluded from the list of culture heritage under threat. He made this statement to journalists in Baku on 15 May.
In 2007, Icherisheher ( Old City) was included in the UNESCO list as a culture heritage under threat.
"The construction of new buildings in the territory near the historical and cultural monuments represents a tremendous threat to the most historical building, necessitating its preservation," he said
According to Matsuura, there might be a need to stop the construction of new buildings in the territory of Icherisheher and complex management of the historical monument. "This is the only way to preserve this important cultural heritage," UNESCO Director General said.
In 1972, UNSECO adopted a Convention on preservation of world culture and natural heritage. In accordance with the Convention, the 'World Heritage' list includes magnificent cultural and natural monuments, representing property of the mankind. The list includes 830 monuments.
