Discussion to be Held in Azerbaijan over Imprisoned Journalists

Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 July / Trend . Corr. E. Babayev/ The Board of Directors of the Press Council of Azerbaijan is expected to discuss the pardon of 3 imprisoned journalists in its meeting next week. "We are concerned about the imprisonment of any journalist in Azerbaijan and Board of Directors will discuss this issue," Aflatun Amashov, chairman of the Press Council of Azerbaijan said to Trend on 4 July.

There are 3 imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan - Eynulla Fatullayev, editor-in-chief of Gundalik Azerbaijan and Realniy Azerbaijan, Ganimat Zahid, editor-in-chief of Azadlig daily and Mirza Sakit, the writer for the same paper.

According to Amashov, an appeal can be made to the Azerbaijani President to pardon imprisoned journalists prior to 22 July Press Day in Azerbaijan. "But the final decision will be made in the meeting of the Board of Directors," Amashov said and added that the Board of Directors of the Press Council has not held meeting since the congress of the Azerbaijani journalists held on 20 June.  "The meeting of the Press Council will discuss organizational issues and the activities of the commissions of the Council will be determined," he said.

The Press Council of Azerbaijan was founded on 15 March 2003 during the first Congress of the Azerbaijani journalists. Aflatun Amashov has been running the Council since it was established.
