Azerbaijani Press Council Functions with New Composition

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 July / corr. Trend E.Babayev / Organizational issues were on focus of the meeting of the Azerbaijani Press Council held on 11 July. The meeting elected Umud Rahimoglu, the chairman of the International Eurasian Fund of Press, and Mushfig Alesgerli, the chairman of journalists' Trade Union, deputy chairman of the Council, the Press Council told Trend after the gathering.

The fifth Congress of the Azerbaijani journalists was held on 20 June 2008. Aflatun Amashov was re-elected the chairman of the organization and new composition of the Press council was formed.

Basing on busy work schedule of Amashov refused to nominate Elchin Shikhli, the chairman of the Union of the Azerbaijani journalists and editor-in-chief of Ayna - Zerkalo newspaper, for the position of deputy chairman at the first meeting held after congress of the organization. Candidatures of Umud Rahimoglu, the chairman of the International Eurasian Fund of Press, as well as Vugar Safarli, the head of Azermetbuatyayim, were nominated to the position of deputy chairman among journalists at the meeting. Safarli, nominated as a public figure, withdrew his candidature. Then Alesgerli was nominated for this position. Rahimoglu and Alesgerli were elected deputy chairmen of the Council as a result of voting.

The composition of appeal commission was determined afterwards. The meeting elected members of the organization including Mehman Aliyev, the general director of Turan news agency, the chairman of the commission on economic issues, Alesgerli on social issues, Kamal Abdulla on education issues and Bakhtiyar Sadigov on language issues. Safarli was elected coordinator of standing commission on problem solving between press and state bodies. Rahimoglu was appointed the chairman of the commission on problems and development prospects of regional press.

At the end, Amashov spoke about work done in connection with the 133rd Anniversary of the National Press. He said that the Council would organize a party in connection with professional holiday. This party envisages participation of heads of leading media outlets operating in the country, representatives of state bodies, as well as, embassies and international organizations.

The Azerbaijani Press Council was established at the first congress of journalists held on 15 March in 2003. Amashov is the chairman of the Council since the period of its establishment.
