Azerbaijani Court Arrests Editor-in-Chief of Ideal Newspaper

Azerbaijan, Baku. 29 October / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Nasimi District Court of Baku made a decision arresting the editor-in-chief of Ideal newspaper.

The arresting decision with regards to the editor-in-chief of Ideal newspaper was made several days ago and a search was announced to arrest him.

As the editor-in-chief did not come to the court process on the claim with regards to him, the court made a decision arresting him. Although Elman Ahmadov, judge who made the decision, confirmed making decision arresting the editor-in-chief, he did not provide details of the case.  

Several days ago, the Azerbaijani Press Council sent appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office on case of Ideal newspaper.

Tanzila Rustamkhanli, the chairman of the Azeri-Turk Women Union, and deputy chairman of Azerittifag, and Sabira Mahmudova, veteran of the Garabagh War, said that Ideal newspaper humiliated their honor and dignity. Nazim Guliyev, the editor-in-chief of Ideal newspaper, was brought an action twice for such actions.

First, the editor-in-chief was sentenced to eight-year imprisonment. The Nasimi District Court sentenced him to two-year and six-month imprisonment in line with claim of Ramiz Zeynalov, the chief of the Central State Traffic Police Department, on 6 November in 2007

Zeynalov filed a suit on the editor-in-chief in accordance with Articles 147 (slander) and 148 (insult) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.

The Baku Court of Appeal cancelled a criminal case because of reconciliation between Zeynalov and Ideal newspaper and Guliyev was discharged.
