Azerbaijan, Baku, 6 November / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The Chairman of the Azerbaijan National Broadcasting Council (NBC) Nushiravan Maharramli does not regard the current situation of the television and radio area as satisfactory.
"W would like the Azerbaijani TV channels to get rid of show business, whish is a disaster of the world television channels in the 21st century," Maharramli told Trend on 6 November.
At present eight TV channels have a license to be aired in the territory of Azerbaijan. Moreover, 14 regional televisions function in the country. Recently, major private TV channels have raised number of show business TV programs. They broadcast few enlightenment TV programs.
6th November in Azerbaijan is marked as the National TV & Radio Day every year.
Although television and radio space has undergone both qualitative and quantitative changes, there is still too much work to do to improve them, Maharramli said. The Broadcasting Council wants both television and radio channels to air intellectual and enlightenment programs, which are interesting for people, he said.
Maharramli also spoke about problems concerning level of TV presenters.
"Presenters seek to behave too modernly, whilst sometimes audiences accept their behavior as frivolity. Unfortunately, some presenters do not know the Azerbaijani language well and very often use foreign words in their speeches, allowing their guests to speak in foreign languages," Maharramli said.
According to the chairman of the NBC, the national TV channels should play an important role in protecting the Azerbaijani language. Although some TV channels pay much attention to level presenters' level, unfortunately, we are dissatisfied with presenters' level in many TV channels.
Channels should pay a special attention to language, which is important for the Azerbaijani nation, he believes.
Maharramli disagrees with opinions alarming the little number of Azerbaijani TV channels.
"Only people unaware of situation in the television and radio voice such opinions. Few or many numbers of TV channels in the country is not a main thing. Number of TV channels will be increased in regions in future. This is a normal number for Azerbaijan, though we do not confine to it. We do not target to open TV channels in order to satisfy someone," Maharramli said.
According to Maharramli, it is too difficult to open TV channels of field character.
"We would like to open Culture channel. However, it is too difficult to open such a channel because of its character. If the culture channel airs show business programs, we will hardly need such channel. We are interested in opening culture channel, whilst it requires a lot of financial means and necessary condition. We will think of opening not only culture channel, but also education and other channels in future, as well. We are not a huge country, such as Germany, Turkey, Russia and the United Kingdom. Territory and audiences of the country should also be taken into consideration," Maharramli said.
