Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 29 / Trend , K.Zarbaliyeva/ Azerbaijani Court refused to release before appointed time a journalist of an opposition newspaper, who is charged with illegal possession of drugs.

Isakhan Ashurov, attorney of a writer-satirist of the Azadlig newspaper Mirza Sakit, claiming that his client has served most part of the sentence and has the right to petition the court for early release, filed a suit in the Narimanov District Court in Baku.

Journalist's petition was rejected at the meeting held at the Narimanov District Court presided over by Judge Elshana Valiyeva on Dec. 29.

Attorney Ashurov said he would send a complaint for the decision of the Narimanov District Court to the Court of Appeal.

Sakit was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in June 2006. He was charged with illegal possession of drugs. The journalist considers his arrest to be a political order and connects it with his radical articles.
