Azerbaijan's first expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro came to 25,000 manat, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Huseyn Bagirov, said at a press-conference on August 21.

"TheAir and Extreme Sports Federation's private sources have financed the expedition, and not the state," Bagirov said.

The first Azerbaijani expedition, headed by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources and President of the Air and Extreme Sports Federation, Huseyn Bagirov, made its way to the Uhuru peak (5,895 meters, the mountain and Africa's highest summit) on August 16.

The Azerbaijani expedition lasted 7 days. It was held under the slogan 'Azerbaijan reaching new heights together with Ilham'.

The Azerbaijani expedition has scientific and political significance, the minister said.

"Members of expeditions from other countries were surprised by the Azerbaijanis. Azerbaijanis will be recognized by the world as extreme sportsmen. Biological and geological samples taken on the Mount Kilimanjaro will be analysed and the results will be published. This African collection will be delivered to the Baku State University Museum," Bagirov said.

In December 2008 the first Azerbaijan-Antarctica expedition reached the continent's highest point, Mount Vinson, which is 5,140 meters high. The Azerbaijani expedition to Antarctica came to 250,000 manat.
