Media to receive aid in two phases

The winners of the competition announced by the Media Development State Support Fund under the Azerbaijani President will receive aid in two phases.

The projects should be implemented in two months. Some 50 percent of the funds allocated for the winners will be issued in the first two months, Executive Director of the Fund, Vugar Safarli, said at a news conference held at the international press-center of Trend news agency on Sep.1.

The Media Development State Support Fund under the Azerbaijani President has announced the competition on12 trends on June 25. Maximal cost of each project is 20,000 manat. The bids were received from July 1-31.

Safarli said that there are 30 newspapers, 13 news agencies, 6 journalists' organizations and 6 other corresponding organizations.

The employees of the Fund will monitor the realization of projects after two months. Unless any problem is found, the rest funds under the projects will be transferred to winner's account, Safarli added.

Regarding the issue of suspending financing in case of revealing problems, Safarli said that in this case they will appeal to court.

The fund announced competition in 12 directions and a winner was not determined in 5 of them. The Fund will hold a special project in this regard. The fund will announce a competition in 5 directions among journalists by late 2009. The particular commission will evaluate the submitted articles and then, announce a winner, Safarli added.

The authors of the projects, which could not pass the competition, may appeal to the fund in 5 days."After, the fund will invite each complainer and explain the reason of failure," Safarli added. 

More than 3,300 media outlets were registered in Azerbaijan. Currently only 600 of them function. Nearly 400 newspapers and magazines are published and more than 20 television channels function. There are about 50 electronic media outlets, 20 news agencies, and the rest are the Internet resources in Azerbaijan.
