Number of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease grows in Iran

In Iran, the number of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease is increasing every 10 minutes, the Iranian television website quoted, the Iranian Health Minister, Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, as saying.

"Six percent of the elderly population, which numbers 4,200,000 people, is suffering from Alzheimer's disease," Dastjerdi said in his interview on the International Day, on Sept. 21.

She said to fight the disease, necessary measures will be taken to establish the Center for Alzheimer's disease under the Health Ministry of Iran or privately.

Alzheimer's disease is accompanied by older people with memory loss, depression, loss of ability to speak and with the most severe form causes death as a result of spasm of the respiratory tract.

The International Alzheimer's Day is celebrated annually on Sept. 21.
