Elderly people comprise 28 percent of the Azerbaijani pensioners, Head of the public relations department of the State Social Protection Fund (SSPF), Elman Babayev, told Trend on Oct. 1.
October 1 is marked as the International Day of Older Persons. In 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution according to which annually the world marks October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.
The Azerbaijani government takes special care and attention to the elderly. On June 22, 2001, National Leader Heydar Aliyev signed the Law "On the provision of social care for older people." Under the law, the elderly in the country are considered citizens of the Azerbaijan Republic, as well as foreign citizens and stateless persons living in the country, who have attained the age of 70.
According to Babayev, 365, 467 people older than 70 years receive the retirement pension.
