Declaration calling for combat against gender inequality adopted in Baku

The conference on 'A woman in Islamic world: traditional features and contemporaneity' was held in Baku.

Problems and prospects of expansion and development of cooperation in certain spheres and women's rights in Islamic world based on foreign countries' experience were discussed at the conference.

The conference was organized by the State Committee on family, women and children problems. Speaking at the conference, Chairman of the Committee on Women's Problems Hijran Huseynova said that there are several urgent issues along with success achieved by ensuring women's rights in the world and Azerbaijan. Therefore, there is a need for mutual exchange of useful experiences and promote cooperation between women of Islamic countries in all spheres of activity.

Participants of the conference also stressed that Islam being a prospective religion has created the ground for women's equality for the first time within an era of humanity. Vioaltion of women's rights, prejudice and prohibitions for women to participate in state affairs in some Muslim countries was also discussed during the conference.

A declaration calling for combat against violence towards women was adopted as a result of the conference. The document also calls for intensified efforts to protect rights of women and children affected by conflicts, participation of Muslim women in promotion of Islamic culture on the international scene.

Members of community on women's problems from Jordan, Qatar and Turkey participated in the conference.
